Experience the beauty and history of "The City Different"

One of the oldest cities in the United States, New Mexico’s state capital of Santa Fe has a rich history and heritage. The city boasts streets filled with adobe buildings, Spanish colonial churches and magnificent Mexican missions; an arts scene that spans from traditional to contemporary; eclectic award-winning cuisine; and a beautiful setting at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. During the seven-night Santa Fe Hangout, New Mexico residents Cindy and Phil Newman SKP# 173927 will share with you some of their favorite sites and activities in and around this beautiful city.

Your Hangout experience will begin with a guided 2-mile walking tour through historic downtown Santa Fe, during which you’ll explore 400 years of history, culture, and architecture. From ancient Indian Pueblos to the birth of the atomic age, your museum-trained guide will bring to life the incredible true stories, colorful characters, and unique places that make Santa Fe “The City Different.”

You’ll tour the New Mexico History Museum and the 400-year-old Palace of the Governors, the country’s oldest continuously occupied public building, and then shop for art, jewelry, and other works by Native American artists who exhibit and sell their wares under the Palace’s iconic portal.

Santa Fe is nearly synonymous with historic religious architecture. You’ll visit some of the city’s most famous churches, including docent-guided tours of the San Miguel Chapel–the oldest church in the U.S.–and the Loretto Chapel, known for its floating two-story “Miraculous Stairs”.

Play Video

An art powerhouse, the City Different is home to more than 250 galleries, 100 of which are located on the winding half mile of Canyon Road, which you’ll visit during the Hangout. You’ll also get to view one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of contemporary New Mexican art during a guided tour of the State Capitol building, a unique example of how art and politics can enhance each other.

At the Santa Fe Railyard, a major shopping, entertainment, dining and events hub, you’ll prowl one of the best and largest farmer’s markets in the country, followed by time to shop, take a stroll in the 13-acre award-winning green space, view contemporary artworks in the high-end galleries, and enjoy lunch together in one of the district’s restaurants.

Meow Wolf's House of Eternal Return, Santa Fe, New Mexico

And for something completely different, you’ll experience Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return, a mind-bending, explorable art installation for people of all ages. Featuring over 70 rooms of immersive art, House of Eternal Return will take you on a macrocosmic adventure into fantastic realms of story and exploration.

There’s plenty to do outside Santa Fe as well! At the Pecos National Historical Park, park rangers will lead you on two hikes (2 1/4 miles total) during which you’ll learn about Ancestral Puebloan sites and culture as well as the Battle of Glorieta Pass that was fought here during the Civil War. And in Madrid, you’ll see how a group of artists brought new life to this ghost town with boutiques, galleries, antique stores and the historic Mine Shaft Tavern, where you’ll enjoy dinner (try their famous green chile cheeseburger!) on the last night of the Hangout.

All this, plus an optional brewery tour and tasting, live music, shopping in the Plaza, potluck meals in camp and more await you at the Santa Fe Hangout!

Optional activities

Choose any or all of these optional activities to add to your Hangout registration. Optional activities must be purchased in advance no later than April 14, 2023, and will not be available for purchase on-site.

Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Private Guided Tour – $25/person

Georgia O’Keeffe was one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, renowned for her contribution to modern art. She spent much of her life working and eventually living in northern New Mexico, where she was inspired by the stark landscapes and Native American and Hispanic cultures of the region.

On this one-hour private docent-led tour of Santa Fe’s Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, conducted before it opens to the general public, you’ll learn about O’Keeffe’s evolution from traditional painting to abstraction as she masterfully depicted New York skyscrapers, flowers, the New Mexican landscape and cultural motifs, and the mountain peaks of Peru and Japan’s Mount Fuji. After the formal tour, you can continue to peruse the Museum’s collection at your leisure.

New Mexican Cooking Class and Meal – $93/person

Santa Fe’s unique cuisine, with its warm tastes and enticing aromas, is as much a part of the city’s soul as its 17th-century architecture. During this three-hour demonstration-style class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking, you’ll learn how to master real Southwest flavors and enjoy a fabulous meal.

This unique experience includes an informative and entertaining demonstration by some of the School’s talented chefs, during which they’ll explain cooking techniques and the lore of the region’s traditional foods. Several mirrors and big screens in the large classroom will make it easy for you to see every detail. The School’s chefs know how to have fun in the kitchen, and they love answering questions and interacting with the participants! You’ll then enjoy the full traditional New Mexican meal that was prepared while you watched.

Note: This class must have at least 25 participants. If the class is canceled because not enough members register, we will refund all payments for this optional activity. Also, please note that this is not a hands-on class.

Flavors of Santa Fe Bicycle Tour – $100/person

Taste your way through award-winning local cuisine and culture as you learn the secrets of New Mexico’s fiery food history on this excursion with Routes Bicycle Tours. In groups of 16-20 riders, each with a professional local guide, you’ll pedal through Santa Fe’s rich culinary landscape and capture behind-the-scenes traditions handed down for centuries.  Through storytelling, ample tastings, and hands-on immersive experiences, you will be sure to fill your belly and your heart with the unique and flavorful cuisine that has won the world over.

This four-hour tour will include 7-10 miles of riding, with food and drink tastings at three of Santa Fe’s hidden gems as well as stops along the way at some of the town’s iconic sites. The ride is easy and mostly level, but participants should be comfortable riding alongside vehicles on public roads.

The fee for this optional activity includes all tastings and restaurant gratuities. Gratuities for your tour guide are at your discretion. Bicycle rental is not included, but if you don’t have your own bike, standard bicycles are available for rent for $10 each, with a few e-bikes also available at a slightly higher cost. All participants must be at least 21 years of age.
