RV Mattress Sizes Explained: Rest Easy With This RV Mattress Guide

When you live in your RV full-time or travel long distances in your RV, you’ll want to have a good mattress so you can get a good night’s sleep. RVers replace their mattresses for a variety of reasons. Some swap out a used RV’s mattress for new and others are simply replacing a worn out or uncomfortable mattress.

There are companies that can set you up with a new RV mattress when you decide to replace yours. You simply need to know the size of the space the new mattress will fit into. However, RV mattress sizes differ from mattresses you’d have in a house.

In this article, we’ll explain all the RV mattress sizes so you can decide which will work best in your RV.

Let’s get started!

Are RV Mattresses the Same Size as Household Mattresses?

No, RV mattresses are not always the same size as household mattresses. Some RVers have chosen to buy a household mattress for their RV, only to find it doesn’t fit and is too heavy as well.

RV mattresses need to fit into smaller spaces. So, RV mattresses are typically smaller.

From bunks up to king size beds, RV mattress sizes are usually narrower and shorter. You will need to measure your RV bed carefully then compare those measurements to the descriptions below to find the RV mattress size you’ll need.

RV Mattress Sizes Explained

Twin RV Mattress Sizes

Twin RV mattress sizes are 35 – 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. Keep in mind that these are not the same size as RV bunk mattresses which are even narrower.

In some vintage RVs, there were often two, twin size beds in the bedroom area with an aisle between them. If you have one of these older RVs in its original layout, you’ll probably be looking for twin size replacement mattresses.

Full RV Mattress Sizes

Corner RV mattress

The size of a full RV mattress is 53 – 55 inches wide by 75 inches long. In a brick and mortar house, it would be considered the same size as a double. This is the smallest mattress that can fit a couple somewhat comfortably. However, one adult can sleep on this size mattress and have ample room to stretch out.

Three-quarter RV mattress sizes

A three quarter rv mattress is usually a larger bed below a smaller bunk, but not always. Their size is typically 48 inches wide by 75 – 80 inches long. If you really like to snuggle, you can fit a couple on this mattress. But it’s usually meant for one adult or a couple of smaller kids.

Queen RV Mattress Sizes

There are two sizes of queen RV mattresses. A short queen is 60 inches by 75 inches and a standard queen is 60 inches by 80 inches. Measure your queen size bed carefully or you could end up with the wrong length mattress!

King RV Mattress Sizes

King RV mattresses come in three sizes: a short king, regular king, and California king. A short king mattress measures 72 inches wide by 75 inches long, usually plenty of space for two adults to stretch out. A regular king RV mattress is the same width as a short king at 72 inches but is longer at 80 inches. These are truly luxurious but not as indulgent as a California king. The California king RV mattress measures 72 inches by a whopping 84 inches long. There won’t be any cold feet dangling over the end of that bed!

Bunk RV Mattress Sizes

Bunk RV mattresses

A bunk RV mattress is the smallest of all the sizes, even though they do come in a wide range. Bunk mattresses measure from 28 – 35 inches wide by 75 to 80 inches long. These beds are perfect for kids or an adult who doesn’t need much space to sleep.

Why Are RV Mattresses Different Sizes and Shapes?

Since there are so many different RV floor plans, there needs to be a variety of RV mattress sizes and shapes to accommodate them. Corners, walls, hallways, built-in furniture, and slide-outs create this need for multiple sizes.

While RV mattresses are usually shorter and narrower, their shapes need to accommodate specific floor plans. From cut-off corners and wall-hugging beds to low height clearances, RV mattresses still need to fit within the confines of the RV floor plan.

RV mattresses must fit on the bed base in your RV. If your mattress is longer than your bed base and your bed needs to fit against a dresser or under a counter when the slide-out is pulled in for example, you could be putting too much strain and pressure on your slide-out or more likely, the built-in furniture.

How to Determine the Mattress Size in Your RV

Measuring the mattress size in your RV is fairly straightforward.

You need to measure from side to side to get a width measurement. Then measure from the head of the bed to the foot to get the length. Mattress sizes are listed in inches and in centimeters. Use whichever is most common where you live.

What some RVers forget to measure, especially if they are in a truck camper, is the height of the space the mattress fits into. You don’t want to get a mattress that fits perfectly by width and length only to find out that when you lie down on the mattress, you’re too close to the ceiling and can’t roll over. And if you can’t roll over, you certainly won’t be able to put sheets on the bed!

Another common feature in some RVs are beds that have a corner cut off so there is enough room to open a bathroom door or closet. This is just one more measurement you’ll need to factor in before buying a new RV mattress.

What If I Can’t Find a Mattress That Fits My RV?

If you can’t find a mattress that will fit your RV, there are custom RV mattress manufacturers who will create a mattress for you. These manufacturers often allow you to pick the materials for your mattress that will best suit your sleeping style, temperature, and more. These mattresses can be a bit pricey, though.

If you are on a budget but still want a good mattress, there is an option for you! Budget conscious RVers have purchased a regular memory foam mattress close to the size they need and cut it themselves to fit their RV bed.

As with any RV bed, you will still have to carefully measure every dimension your mattress must fit into. Once you do that, you can measure and mark on your memory foam mattress where you should cut so it will fit correctly. Remember to measure any odd angles or corners that must be cut off. From there, simply use a regular or electric serrated knife to get the cutting job done!

Wrapping Up

Your RV mattress purchase is an important one. You want to enjoy lying down on a mattress that meets your needs and fits your RV, especially after a long day of driving.

By measuring carefully and choosing the right size mattress for your RV, you’ll be sure to have a comfortable space to get a great night’s sleep.

Happy travels and sweet dreams!
