Welcome 2022 in classic South Texas fashion

San Antonio: a Texas city rich in history, bursting with culture and booming with modern attractions. From the hustle and bustle of the Riverwalk to the rich culture embodied in the Spanish colonial life, visitors are invited to discover what’s old and new, and to indulge in the adventure! During the San Antonio New Year’s Hangout, we will embrace what the city and surrounding area have to offer and welcome in 2022 in classic Southern Texas fashion!

The first full day of the Hangout will begin with an Urban Adventure Quest Scavenger Hunt. The 2-mile walking route starts at the Alamo and takes us along the San Antonio Riverwalk to solve clues and learn about the rich history of the city, all while teaming up with fellow Escapees! Teams will be encouraged to take pictures along the way for additional fun. The hunt will lead to lunch at the Biergarten Riverwalk, located right off the Riverwalk. Following lunch, we will be whisked away on the GoRio boats for a narrated tour of the historic Riverwalk from the San Antonio River. That evening after dinner on your own, we will gather at the RV park for sharing of the scavenger hunt results and photos.

During the week, we will bike ride (or drive) part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park to experience the culture that made this park the first and only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas. We will visit four of the southernmost missions: Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, and Espada. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bike–San Antonio has a great system of bike rentals available through San Antonio Bike Share. Our bike ride will begin and end near Künstler Brewing, where you will have the opportunity for a cool beverage and lunch.

Our mid-point in the Hangout will be a New Year’s Eve Party to ring out 2021 and celebrate the arrival of 2022 in typical southwest Texas fashion–complete with a catered Tex-Mex meal, dancing and festivities. But don’t worry, the fun won’t end there!

On January 1, following a potluck brunch, we will carry on the Hangouts tradition of a New Year’s Day hike at McAllister Park, where options for both short and long hikes will be available in a beautiful park setting.

San Antonio New Year's Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List) 3
Japanese tea garden

We’ll get a view into a different part of San Antonio’s history and culture during a visit to the Historic Japanese Tea Garden–a gorgeous oasis with winding paths and stone bridges–followed by lunch at the Jingu House Cafe. The Japanese Tea Garden has a 90-year history, originating as a rock quarry but now transformed into one of the most loved educational and cultural resources in San Antonio.

Even miniature golf is a part of San Antonio’s history! We’ll experience that first-hand during our mini-golf party at Cool Crest Miniature Golf, one of the oldest continuously operated courses of its kind in the country, with the original course dating to 1929. The two courses have been lovingly restored to their original beauty, earning Cool Crest a designation as a historically significant site by San Antonio’s Historic and Design Commission.

San Antonio New Year's Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List) 4

During the evenings, we will enjoy potluck dinners, interactive and team games, as well as informative RV talks and rig tours!

Optional activities

The city of San Antonio has so much to offer, and we want you to have every chance to experience the many sides of this colorful city. For this Hangout, we have three optional activities that you can choose to include in your registration.

Alamo After Hours Tour ($50/person)

San Antonio New Year's Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List) 5No trip to San Antonio would be complete without a tour of The Alamo! Although we will be in the Alamo district during our scavenger hunt, taking the exclusive Alamo After Hours Tour will provide you with the opportunity to learn from a docent about the historical significance of this Spanish mission, not only for Texas but for the United States as a whole.

The Alamo After Hours guided tour explores the heroes and events that have made the story of the Alamo captivating for generations of Texans and visitors. And because this is a private tour, we will have the place to ourselves, with none of the usual crowds to contend with!

Lightscape ($25/person)

San Antonio New Year's Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List) 6First premiering to sold-out crowds in the U.K. and then Chicago, Lightscape will transform the San Antonio Botanical Garden’s 38 acres by night. You’ll be enchanted by magical light displays set along a beautifully illuminated one-mile path. The trail will feature a one-of-a-kind experience blending new works, including a field of Texas Bluebonnets, with guest favorites such as the Cathedral of Lights, with over 100,000 lights sparkling across the Cathedral Arch Tunnel. In addition, there will be the opportunity to enjoy festive food and drinks, including roasting s’mores!

Natural Bridge Caverns Tour ($20/person)

Explore Natural Bridge Caverns, Texas’ largest caverns and one of the world’s premier show caves, on a guided tour through its huge underground chambers. Once on-site you also can select to test your balance, agility, and strength against the ropes course and zip rails. Or find your way through one of the only permanent outdoor mazes in Texas. Shopping and dining is also available on site to complete the visit.

Hangout location

San Antonio New Year's Hangout (SOLD OUT/Waiting List) 7Our home base for the San Antonio New Year’s Hangout will be the Braunig Lake RV Resort, located just south of the city in Elmendorf, Texas. All of our RV sites have full hookups with 20/30/50 amp electric service, water and sewer. The park is big rig-friendly and allows up to two pets per RV. The resort has a 5-acre lake as well as an enclosed activity center for all of our evening festivities, including our Texas-sized New Year’s Eve Party!

COVID-19 precautions (updated August 18, 2021)

Because the safety of our members and staff is our number one priority, proof of either full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test will be required to attend this event.

Escapees recommends that members be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before attending any club event. (“Fully vaccinated” means that at least two weeks have passed since receiving the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson or Astra-Zeneca vaccines). Participants who are not fully vaccinated must obtain a COVID-19 test not more than 72 hours (three days) before entering this event.

    • At event check-in, you will be asked to present either a valid CDC vaccination card showing that you are fully vaccinated OR the written results of a negative COVID-19 test performed within the past 72 hours.
    • If you don’t have a test, have lost your vaccination card, or are outside of the 72-hour window, locations of the nearest testing facilities will be provided to you. You will be required to self-isolate until a negative test can be provided.
    • Participants who test positive are not allowed to remain on site, and will receive a full refund of their registration fee.
Situations in which you may not attend this event

You may not attend this event if any of the following are true for you or anyone in your party, unless you have met CDC criteria for discontinuing self-isolation:

    • Within 14 days before attending the event you have tested positive, or been exposed to someone who has tested positive, for COVID-19, or
    • Within 48 hours before attending the event, you have experienced symptoms of COVID-19 (e.g., a fever of 100 or higher, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking muscle pain/achiness, headache, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, nasal congestion, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, or any other symptoms associated with COVID-19 identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), whether or not you are vaccinated, unless you have obtained a negative COVID-19 test since the onset of your symptoms and within 72 hours before entering this event.
FAQs about the vaccine/testing requirement

While PCR tests are preferred because they are the most accurate, antigen tests (also referred to as rapid tests) will be accepted.

Yes, children who are not fully vaccinated will need a negative COVID-19 test result to attend.

If you are not fully vaccinated, you can get tested at any facility that offers COVID-19 testing. The websites of most state or county public health departments can help you find testing locations. Many retail pharmacies also offer testing. Your event hosts will have a list of testing locations in the area of the event.

If you test positive for COVID-19 before the event, you are unfortunately no longer eligible to attend. To receive a full refund of your registration fee, email a copy of your positive test result to us at hangouts@escapees.com.

If you test positive for COVID-19 during the event, you may not remain on-site at the event.

If you’ve had COVID-19 within 14 days before attending the event (meaning you are still within the 14-day isolation window), you are unfortunately not eligible to attend. To receive a full refund of your registration fee, email a dated copy of your positive test result to us at hangouts@escapees.com.

If you’ve lost your CDC vaccine card, you will need to obtain a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours before arriving at the event.

Masks recommended indoors

In accordance with current guidance from the CDC, Escapees strongly recommends that all attendees, vaccinated or not, wear a mask when participating in activities or socializing with other participants indoors. Attendees are also expected to comply with all masking requirements issued by any governmental entity or private business.

Other precautions

The COVID-19 health and safety precautions that will be in effect during the Hangout will depend on the state of the pandemic, local and state health regulations, and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and other medical professionals at the time. These precautions may include measures such as requiring wearing of masks in certain situations, requiring social distancing, avoiding indoor group activities, limiting carpooling, and/or limiting activities that include sharing of food. In addition to the above, you may be required to agree in writing that you will help provide a safe environment for everyone by complying with our health and safety rules, and to release Escapees from liability should you become ill during or after the event.

Please also be aware that the availability and content of some planned activities may change depending on local and state health regulations and the business’ own COVID-19 mitigation policies.
